Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the performance of a power-operated linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) fibre extraction machine under different feed rates and moisture contents and to identify suitable operating conditions for efficient fibre recovery.

Study Design: Factorial experimental design with three replications.

Place and Duration of Study: Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, SVCAET & RS, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India, during 2025–2026.

Methodology: The performance of the machine was evaluated using retted linseed stems at three feed rates (35, 40 and 45 kg h⁻¹) and three moisture contents (25, 30 and 35%). The machine was operated at a constant speed of 570 rpm. The experiments were conducted using a factorial design with three replications. Fibre extraction efficiency and fibre loss were considered the primary performance parameters for assessing machine performance.

Results: Feed rate and moisture content significantly influenced the performance of the linseed fibre extraction machine. The highest fibre extraction efficiency of 98.06% and the lowest fibre loss of 1.21% were obtained at a feed rate of 40 kg h⁻¹ and a moisture content of 30%. These operating conditions resulted in efficient fibre recovery from retted linseed stems.

Conclusion: The power-operated linseed fibre extraction machine demonstrated efficient fibre recovery under the identified operating conditions. A feed rate of 40 kg h⁻¹ and a moisture content of 30% were found suitable for achieving high extraction efficiency and minimal fibre loss. The machine offers potential for improving linseed stem utilisation and promoting value addition to agricultural residues.
